Who will win the 2008 US Open?

Terry Lane - Friday 16.05.08, 16:04pm

The 2008 US Open golf championship will be played at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego, California and starts on 9 - 15 June.

Last year Angel Cabrera became the first South American to win the U.S. Open but this year, can anyone see passed the mighty Tiger Woods?

After stating at the beginning of the season that he was aiming to win all five major events this year, and losing by three shots to Trevor Immelman at the US Masters championship, Tiger will be fired up for this one.

The Torrey Pines Golf Course is a long course so big hitters should have the upper hand.

So if Tiger slips up or starts poorly and leaves himself too much to do on the final round, like he did at The Masters, who will be there to sneak a victory? How about big-hitter Phil Mickelson?

Ignoring the fact that he missed the cut last year, due in part because he was not 100% fit to play, he has previously been runner-up on four occasions.

My money is going on Mickelson, how about yours?

Who is NOT going to win the 2008 U S Open?

Tiger won’t. Forget his record at Torrey Pines. Just like Augusta,he has stayed away from competitive golf too long. Add to this his recent surgery on his knee makes him not a force to reckon with.

Neither will Phil. Ever since his debacle at Winged Foot he has not and will not ever win another major. It’s psychological with him. He has the swing and overall game to shine but his brain is wired to blow up when opportunity presents itself.

Vijay is still struglling with his swing. Count him out.

Sergio G is not comfortable with his putting. He will have cotton in his mouth on the greens that we won’t be able to spit, let alone win.

And how about Els? Since he broke his hand has he ever done something really significant?

Look for another long hitter, an exception short game and putter, or a wily veteran to come through on this one. It is anybody’s guess.
