Tiger Woods pulled out all the stops at the Buick Open after a disastrous opening round had left him eight shots off the lead on Thursday, the world number one hit back in spectacular style with a brilliant 63 on Friday, followed by 65 on Saturday and a final round of 69.
The win gave Woods his fourth title of the year and the perfect response to having missed the cut for only the second time in his professional career at Turnberry last week. Woods finished the final round with a three stroke victory over nearest rivals Roland Thatcher, John Senden and Greg Chalmers, all equal on 271 to Woods 268.
For the first time in his career Woods will play back to back events before going into a major, with the next stop at the World Golf Championship at the Firestone Golf Club in Ohio, where he has won the event six times, before going into the final major of the year at Hazeltine Golf club later this month.
Woods said after turning it around and winning the Buick Open:
“I know what I’m doing wrong, it’s just a matter of getting enough reps in. Next few days I’ll be able to do that and hopefully solidify come Thursday. Firestone’s always a difficult track. If we don’t get any rain down there, it’ll be hard and fast.”
