Tiger Woods wins BMW Championship in emphatic style

John Williams - Monday 14.09.09, 13:25pm

200px-tiger_woods_drives_by_allisonIt all looked so easy for the world number one Tiger Woods as he continued from where he left off in round three of the BMW Championship in Illinois, to claim an emphatic eight shot win and also the number one spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs heading into the Tour Championship.

Woods had carried a seven shot lead into the final round and with birdies on the seventh and ninth and an eagle on the fifteenth he was able to increase his advantage over the field by one more shot, ending eight clear of nearest rivals, 2005 champion Jim Furyk and Marc Leishman in second place on 11 under.

Such was Woods dominance of the final round that second placed Furyk suggested it had been like playing a ‘tournament within a tournament’, adding, “Tiger was seven ahead. He was kind of running away. It was kind of a tournament for second place.”

An elated Tiger Woods said;

“It’s one of my best years, there’s no doubt about that. I haven’t won as many times as I did in 2000, didn’t win any majors this year.

But I’ve never had a year where I’ve been this consistent, either, this many high finishes and the number of events I’ve played. To have an opportunity just about every time I tee it up to win the championship on the back nine, that’s something that I can’t tell you how proud I am.”

Padraig Harrington in sixth and Luke Donald in 28th are the only Europeans to have qualified.
