While the UK offers some great golfing destinations, there comes a time when the seasoned golfer wants to take their teeing off further afield and to discover what other areas have to offer. Luckily for British golfers, there is no need to travel too far to discover some of the most enticing and exciting courses that the world has to offer, with European golf greens offering a range of challenges and experiences.
For many the appeal of travelling away from home for a round or two is the idea of escaping our island’s inclement weather. Golfers looking to get away for this reason would be best suited by some of the traditional golfing resorts that can be found in Spain and Portugal – both of which offer mild winters and warm summers along with some of the best kept courses on the continent.
Spain’s Costa Del Sol has long been a popular destination with the golfing crowd offering more than 20 courses for the travelling golfer to try out, while Portugal’s Algarve has also carved an important niche in the golfing market for itself with its championship courses coupled with a range of additional family friendly sporting activities on site.
For those seeking something a little different there are some other enticing areas in Europe. For example, the Swiss Alps offer a hitherto almost hidden treasure trove of amazing mountain greens, with as many as 18 courses for the keen golfer to choose from, including the spectacular construction at the resort of Verbier which offers a stunning viewing station for vistas across Mt Blanc and the Grand Combin.
More mountain golf can be played in Austria, with golfing opportunities on offer in a range of areas including Innsbruck, Zell am See and Kitzbuhel – where there is a choice of no less than four amazing courses
Italy offers great golf in a number of areas, from the famous lakes to the uplands of Liguria, while France also boasts a range of opportunities for golfing further afield, with a range of country and coastal courses offering something for everyone.
The rising star in the European Golfing destinations chart is Belgium which boasts 50 courses on its small territory, fifty percent of which have been ranked in the continent’s 1000 best. For those headed to the more traditional tourism destinations there are some great golfing luxury hotel deals available, but what about those wanting to tee off on a tighter budget?
Eastern Europe, it would seem is the emerging contender in the golfing stakes with courses springing up in Poland, The Czech Republic, Estonia and Lithuania, to name but a few.
The much-loved sport had been banned in these areas as an elitist pursuit before the fall of the iron curtain, but in keeping with other developments and westernisation, many countries are taking the initiative and coming up with some superb offerings in stunning surroundings – great for those looking to travel and experience golf abroad without breaking the bank.
