Having spent the weekend around the top of the leaderboard in each of the four rounds at the 138th British Open at Turnberry, the fairy tale ending for Tom Watson was ultimately just beyond the Americans grasp, losing by six shots to fellow American Stewart Cink in a play off, after the pair had finished the tournament on two under.
Watson who had started the Open as very much an outsider, took the tournament by surprise from day one, endearing himself to the huge crowds of golf fans around the Turnberry course as he turned back the years in an effort to win his sixth British Open Championship.
It was a cruel way to end the championship for Watson and the crowd responded with near silence as Cink stole the game at the last throw of the dice. Cink described the win as a ’surreal experience’ and added
“Playing against Tom Watson, this stuff just does not happen – I grew up watching him, he has turned back the clock and I feel so happy just being part of it.”
A disappointed Watson said after the tournament,
“It would have been a hell of a story, wouldn’t it? It tears out your gut like it’s always torn out my gut. It’s not easy to take. I put myself in position to win and didn’t do it. I hit a lousy putt and the play-off was one bad shot after another. Stewart did what he had to do and I didn’t give him much competition. But what I take from this week is a lot of warmth – the crowds were just wonderful to me all week – and a lot of spirituality. And it was good fun.”
Congratulations to Stewart Cink who did everything right on the final day and thanks to Tom Watson for a heart warming effort and more memories from another magnificent British Open Championship at Turnberry.
