Ireland’s Peter Lawrie won the European PGA Spanish Open yesterday in an exciting finish by beating the Spanish golfer Ignacio Garrido on the second play-off hole.
The Open de Espana 2008 (Spanish Open) was held at the Real Club de Golf in Seville; and on the final day, Garrido was one of a three Spanish players with a chance of winning the European PGA Spanish Open. Both Jimenez & Garcia-Heredia finished two shots behind the leaders with 13 under.
Lawrie looked set to win without a sudden death play-off until Garrido finished with an amazing 30ft birdie putt to tie on 15 under.
Both Lawrie & Garrido birdied the first play-off hole, but then Garrido found the water.
This is the first victory on the European PGA Tour for Peter Lawrie, the 34-year-old from Dublin, Ireland at the 175th attempt; and after Damiern McGrane won in China two weeks ago and Darren Clarke’s victory in the Asian Open, that’s three Irish wins in a row.
