Padraig Harrington Wins The British Open

Thomas Rooney - Monday 21.07.08, 17:31pm

Irish golfer Padraig Harrington successfully defended his Open Championship title yesterday as he secured a four-shot victory over Englishman Ian Poulter at Royal Birkdale. Greg Norman finished tied in third with Henrik Stenson, while English amateur Chris Wood, finished level with Jim Furyk in fourth place.

The day belonged to Padriag Harrington though who celebrated his victory in glorious sunshine – a stark contrast from the wet and windy conditions that plagued the opening two days of this year’s Championship. The 36-year-old fired a closing 69 to finish on three over, while Ian Poulter also went round in 69 to secure a runner up slot. I have to say I am pleased to see Ian Poulter competing at the top end of the leader board – he was even wearing sensible clothes yesterday!

I think it is fair to say that in terms of golf betting, Padraig Harrington was undoubtedly the favourite going into the final round. Greg Norman held a two-shot lead overnight, but reigning champion Padraig Harrington was breathing down his neck and considering Greg Norman’s reputation for throwing away leads in major championships – most people were backing the Irishman to secure back-to-back victories in the British Open.

This was the seventh time that Greg Norman has led going into the final day of a major without winning it.  This must have been at the front of his mind going into yesterday’s play and would have certainly contributed to his downfall.

The day didn’t start at all well for the overnight leader – he bogeyed each of the first three holes to hand Padraig Harrington the early advantage. However, the Irishman faltered himself by dropping three consecutive shots to fall one-shot behind Greg Norman. At this stage, things were really getting interesting.

However, like the beginning of the front nine, the beginning of the back nine was poor for Greg Norman – three bogeys in four holes effectively cost him the title. Padriag Harrington then went onto make birdies on the 13th and 15th to reach five-over par and see of the challenge of the 53-year old.

It was then Ian Poulter – who was in the clubhouse on seven-over par – that was Padraig Harrington’s biggest challenger. On the 17th hole though, the outcome of the British Open was all but sealed as Padraig Harrington sunk a six-foot eagle putt to finish three-over par.

It was a fantastic tournament to watch and there is no doubt in my mind that the best man won. Fair play to Ian Poulter and of course, to Greg Norman – but Padraig Harrington is one of golf’s greatest characters and I wish him every success.

Just a final thought for today, Padraig Harrington – just like US Open Champion Tiger Woods – was doubtful going into this tournament. All I will say is - beware of injured golfers!
