Europe’s Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie is hoping to address his own slump in form in recent times by targeting a personal tournament victory before the start of the Ryder Cup.

Monty is currently languishing in 287th place in the world rankings and the 46 year old Scot has not won an individual event since way back in July 2007 and he admits that he has not performed very well in recent times.

He says he would like to have a win under his belt before the Ryder Cup starts, adding “I’d like to stand in front of my team at the opening ceremony as a tournament winner myself this year.”

Montgomerie added that his placement as captain of the Europe team has heaped pressure on him off the links;

“It has been difficult time-wise to fit everything in, to try and concentrate on playing at a certain level at the same time as all of the administration and all of the time consumed in organising and in being the host Ryder Cup captain.

There’s an awful lot more to do being the host than there is being the away captain so it has been very busy, but it’s been exciting at the same time.”

While Monty struggles to find his own game he will draw strength from the players that he will have with him when the Ryder Cup tees off at Celtic Manor in October, with five players currently in the worlds top ten and another four inside the top twenty.

Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey, Martin Kaymer and Padraig Harrington are amongst the current top ten players with Rory McIlroy, Henrik Stenson, Sergio Garcia and Luke Donald in the top twenty performers.
