Mark Calcavecchia sets birdie record at Canadian Open

John Williams - Monday 27.07.09, 13:19pm

200px-mark_calcavecchia_2008Former Open champion Mark Calcavecchia managed to set a new PGA tour record of nine consecutive birdies in the third round of the Canadian Open in Oakville over the weekend.

Calcavecchia’s record breaking effort was not enough to give the player the lead in the Canadian Open and he settled at that point into joint 17th at eight under and five off the lead.

The American who won the Open in 1989, said of his record breaking round at Oakville;

“It is just fly it right to the stick, You give the guys out here no wind and greens that are plugging then you are going to see a lot of low scores. Records are made to be broken. Could somebody make 10 in a row? Sure, it wouldn’t surprise me if some guy whips out 10 birdies in a row sometime this weekend, it really wouldn’t. These guys are good.”

The previous record of eight birdies has been achieved by half a dozen players, the most recent Jerry Kelly in 2003.
