South African Rory Sabbatini and American Steve Marino share the first round lead on five under par in the third of the FedEx Cup playoffs, The BMW Championship in Illinois.
Sabbatini who missed the cut in the first two events of the FedEx Cup playoffs, bogeyed the first and fifth but seven birdies was enough to join Marino at the top of the leaderboard.
Marino’s bogey four on the second, turned out to be the only dropped shot for the American who included six birdies to reach his 66 for the first round.
A happy Rory Sabbatini said after the first round;
“I obviously didn’t play very well the last couple of weeks. These things tend to break out of their cycles and it was nice to get out there today and actually have a nice, fun, relaxing round of golf. I drove it very well and on this course that’s key, because since the redesign they’ve made it a lot more of a chess game around the greens.”
Marc Leishman and Bo Van Pelt are tied in second place on 67, while six players share third place with 68 on the first day.
Tiger Woods and Padraig Harrington are amongst the third placed group, which also includes David Toms, Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Villegas and John Mallinger.
