iPhones and similarly powerful hand-helds are now changing the way we do things on a daily basis. Now you can use your iPhone to read the wind velocity.
The Wind Meter application for iPhones was developed GoApps. They were the first to come up with this concept of using the iPhone microphone for detecting wind speed about 6 months ago and began working with the necessary sound conversions, algorithms and programmers. It has taken a considerable amount of testing time and program up-dating for this device to give good approximate wind readings.
The remarkable Wind Meter app can be used to check the wind velocity for a multitude of recreational uses such as golf, sailing, boating, kite surfing, wind surfing and many others.
The Wind Meter is a top 10 selling weather apps at iTunes. However, with most golf clubs banning the use of mobile phones while on the course, I see the use of this actual device being limited to reading the wind speed before you start a round, more than other hand-held devices that can be used before each shot.
The Wind Meter costs €78 or $0.99.

Just point your phone in the direction of the flag and hit calculate. Using your GPS location, Golf Wind uses a custom alorithm to provide accurate current wind direction and speed. Using this data, Golf Wind calculates the effects of wind and shows an animation of how the ball will move in flight. Head wind? Need an extra club? This tool will help you to answer these questions.
As any golfer knows, the effects of wind are different based on your natural ball flight spin. With a left to right cross wind, the ball will move more for a right handed golfer with a natural fade vs a straight hitter. This is why we have built in the ability to calibrate the wind calculation for a completely custom accurate calculation. It is simple to do, and the app will save this custom calibration and apply it to future calculations.
Golf Wind also displays the current temperature and humidity helping you even more in your shot and club selection process.

We believe we have created an iPhone application that will be very helpful to your readers. It is a wind gauge that uses the phones GPS to apply a custom algorhithm to show wind speed and direction and the effects of current winds on the golf ball. Regardless of where you are or which way you are facing, the gauge will show you which direction the wind is coming from and at what speed.
Here is a link with screen shots and more info on the application.
