It was an amazing performance from Greg Norman at Royal Birkdale last week, he pushed Padriag Harrington all the way for the major championship title and he can be proud of the show he helped put on. However, it has been a case of ‘back to reality’ for the 53-year-old who has struggled at the opening day of the Senior Open at Royal Troon in Scotland.
In terms of european golf betting it would have been difficult to hit the heights of his British Open showing, but Greg Norman will be disappointed that he only managed to record four over par in the first round of the tournament yesterday.
Greg Norman led the British Open going into the final round, but reminiscent of the first few holes there, he admitted that ‘things weren’t going my way early on’ at Royal Troon. The Australian stated that he didn’t feel confident with his tee shots early on and this culminated with luck being against him resulted in a poor opening round. However, as Greg Norman says, there is more than just one round of golf in this tournament and he still has a chance to play catch up.
If Greg Norman does manage to get in amongst the leaders he will have to catch Eduardo Romero and Bruce Vaughan who share the lead on three under par. The latter could have been clear of the field and a lot of golf betting would have been stopped with regards to the winner of this event, but he double bogeyed the 6th hole and triple bogeyed the 12th to spoil his otherwise successful round.
At this stage, the men with a more realistic chance of chasing the leaders than Greg Norman are his playing partner Tom Watson and Germany’s Bernhard Langer. Both golfers recorded rounds of 70 to finish two shots behind the leaders on one under par.
Whether Greg Norman can comeback in this event is debatable, but if he can somehow recapture the form he showed at Royal Birkdale, there is every chance that he can begin to climb the leader board. Go Greg!
