The rolling green fairways of the Estonian Golf & Country Club will once again welcome rock music legend Rick Wakeman when he returns for his second Golf Classic at the renowned Tallinnvenue.

TheEuropean Tour-designed course will host the former Yes keyboard wizard and his 80 guests as they compete over the Sea Course – ranked in the Top 100 European Courses – in aid of children’s charity Sparks on Saturday, 18th June, 2011.

Following the event Rick Wakeman and his band will entertain guests into the night with a concert at the Tallink Spa and Conference Hotel located in the middle of beautiful Tallinn.

Estonian Golf & Country Club, the only European Tour course in Eastern Europe, will provide the perfect setting for those competing as The Sea Course winds its way through forests before opening out alongside the Gulf of Finland and the Jägala River, enjoying stunning views across the gulf.

“I have had the real honour of visiting Estonia at the height of summer and the height of winter, and in both cases I found Tallinn and the surrounding countryside absolutely beautiful,” said Rick Wakeman.

“I first saw the golf course when it was completely enveloped with snow, but when I saw it at the start of the season I simply fell in love with it. It is beautifully designed and a great test of golf for all standards of player. It’s certainly a course I would, and indeed have, highly recommended to friends to go and play, and to spend time in Tallinn itself.”

Last year’s event, combined with Rick Wakeman’s English golf day at Burhill Golf Club, helped to raise more than £40,000 for Sparks – a charity that helps all babies to be born healthy and stay healthy by funding high quality medical research into childhood diseases.

The Estonian Golf & Country Club will also stage European Qualifying for the Mission Hills World Cup in August.

One of the UK’s most successful golfers and Europe’s 2011 Solheim Cup captain, Alison Nicholas will be sharing her thoughts ahead of September’s eagerly anticipated showdown. Edgbaston Golf Club, Birmingham and Fulford Golf Club, York will be the venues for an exclusive Solheim Cup evening on June 1st and June 2nd respectively.

Alison Nicholas’s career in golf has spanned from 1980 to 2004, starting off late at the age of 17 but quickly went on to represent Yorkshire at county level and turned pro in 1984. Since then she has claimed 18 professional titles and represented Europe in the inaugural Solheim Cup in 1990. The highlight of Alison’s career came in 1997 when she was crowned US Open Champion and held off golfing legend Nancy Lopez to win her first major.

The U.S. Team leads the competition 8-3 and has never lost The Solheim Cup on home soil. In 2009, the Americans kept their untarnished home record intact at Rich Harvest Farms with a 16 to 12 victory against the Europeans. It’s now Europe’s turn to win back the trophy in Ireland at Killeen Castle on September 23-25.

Alison Nicholas, who has been awarded a MBE for her services to women’s golf is looking forward to her trip to Birmingham and York ahead of the September competition. She said “I really enjoy meeting other golfers and telling stories from on and off the course. It will be great to be in Birmingham and York to share my own Solheim Cup Stories as excitement builds towards the tournament.”

Event Organisers Tourism Ireland said “To have Alison at Edgbaston and Fulford Golf Club will be great inspiration for the local golfing community. We can’t wait to meet her and support the team in September for the Solheim Cup.”

UKGCOA & OGRO combined annual golf industry event at Dale Hill

UKGCOA & OGRO combine for annual event at Dale Hill

The UK Golf Course Owners Association (UKGCOA) has joined forces with the The Organisation of Golf & Range Operators (OGRO) to host a combined annual golf industry event at Dale Hill Hotel and Golf Club, East Sussex, on March 31, 2011.

The one-day event, which builds on the success of the existing OGRO meeting, will bring together golf course and golf range owners and operators, to share best practice and industry experience.

The day will feature a golf competition in the morning over 18 holes on the acclaimed Woosnam Course, lunch, table-top exhibition, plus several informal presentations throughout the afternoon, including an update from Sports Marketing Surveys on the market and business performance data it has been commissioned to research by the UKGCOA and made available to members. The day will conclude with a special dinner at which Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to both Adrian Yallop of European Golf Machinery and Doug McClelland PGA for their outstanding contributions to the golf industry.

Colin Mayes, Chairman of the UKGCOA, and Chief Executive of Burhill Golf & Leisure, said:

“This is an excellent opportunity for members of both organisations, and all golf course and golf range operators, to come together in one place, for one day, to share industry intelligence and best practice.

“While the creation of accurate business performance data and benchmarking standards for the golf course industry is the number one objective of the UKGCOA – and the key benefit of membership – an annual conference is among our plans. So, in our first year, we are pleased to be working with OGRO and joining its successful event which already attracts 150 delegates.”

Owners and operators from golf courses of all sizes are welcome to attend the event and speak to other UKGCOA members and board members about the benefits of membership. Among the board members present will be Jane Montgomery (FSPA), Stephen Lewis (Crown Golf), John Weir (Cornerstone Golf) and Colin Mayes.

Event organiser Colin Jenkins of OGRO, said:

“Bringing OGRO and UKGCOA members together in this way will be beneficial for the industry as a whole.

“The OGRO Event 2011, sponsored by Global Ranges and Srixon-Cleveland, will be a practical, insightful and beneficial day. It will also be fun and an opportunity to share time with fellow industry professionals.”
